This workshop was created to provide you with a well-rounded understanding of the fundamental topics and tasks you should be thinking about before starting any new business venture. Over the course of the day we’ll cover five crucial topics, including:

Step #1. Developing Your Team

As a business owner your attention should be focused squarely on the tasks which contribute to the company’s growth. So we’ll kick the workshop off with an overview of the key individuals which you should be adding to your team right away in order to ensure your attention isn’t unnecessarily divided:

  • Developing Your Team - Why “You” Can’t Do Everything

Step #2. Selecting the Proper Type of Business Entity

Several different business entities are recognized within the United States, and each possesses its own unique set of advantages and drawbacks. Determining which business entity makes the most sense for your purposes will be pivotal in terms of your ability to efficiently manage and grow the company. To help you sort out these details, this step introduces the following topics:

  • Dissecting Your Available Options: Corporations, Partnerships, Limited Liability Companies, and Sole Proprietorships
  • Legal formalities and Management Structure
  • Management Agreements (the roles of shareholders’ agreements, partnership agreements, operating agreements)
  • Tax Considerations: A Cursory Glance

Step #3. Forming Your Business Entity

After having decided upon an appropriate business entity, it’s time to form the business and get to work! In this step you’ll learn more about the formation process, helping you to ensure a smooth and rapid transition towards an established entity:

  • The Role of Your Attorney and Engagement Letters
  • Ohio Secretary of State Organizing Document Requirements
  • Drafting Management Agreements

Step #4. Choosing the Business Entity Tax Status

“Death and taxes”, as they say. Understanding how business taxation works will play an incredibly important role in your company’s financial health, and in this step you’ll be exposed to the steps you should take to make sure your company is properly positioned to handle the tax burden in the years to come:

  • The Role of Your Certified Public Accountant and Engagement Letters
  • Taxation Considerations: Maximizing Your Bottom Line

Step #5. Financial and Operational Decisions

Although you might excel in writing software, building picture frames, publishing books, or designing clothes, keeping tabs on the bottom line will undoubtedly be a talent you’ll want to possess for years to come. In this concluding step you’ll learn all about budgeting, revenue streams, bookkeeping, reporting, and why people, processing and planning will make or break your business. Topics include:

  • Accounting 101
  • Developing a Budget
  • Identifying Revenue Streams (Clients vs Customers)
  • Determining Revenue and Product Costs
